Maria Teresa Freediving InstructorMaria-Teresa Solomons, or, “MT” in the freediving community, has been instructing and competing internationally, for more than 14yrs and has seen the progression in the science of freediving and its techniques since its beginnings as a world class competitive sport, and has been taught by and has taught with its original mentors, Umberto Pelizzari and Pipin Ferreras, as well as the world champions of today.

Recently she was invited to be assistant instructor for World Champion, Will Trubridge during one of his exclusive training courses at Dean’s Blue Hole, Bahamas, with British-born world champion, Sara Campbell. She also participated in the 2012 SUUNTO Vertical Blue World Cup as part of the deep freedive safety team and has been invited to train the freedive safety team training at the championships in Roatan, 2013.

MT is one of only a few AIDA Instructor Trainers world-wide, and is the only qualified Instructor Trainer in Mexico where she was one of the original founders and of AIDA Mexico and consultant to the Mexican freedive team from 2005 to the present.  She was leading female in two depth disciplines in the World Mediterranean Cup 2010, has attended three more World Championships, twice as member of the UK Team, 2008 & 2010, and as a member of the Israeli team 2001, and has logged many freedives in the major depth disciplines between 65m and 85m. She has also and AIDA judge and has organized and acted as judge in several national and international World Series competitions.

She holds a valid CPR license and is covered by DanEurope with full liability professional elite insurance, Dan Professional Gold, with the added benefit that allows her to cover any student participating in a course with her if they dont hold their own insurance and if they state this preference before the start of the course, clinic or training session.

As understanding depth and pressure has become clearer but perhaps even more enigmatic, and the sport has grown more popular, and as we understand more about what human potential really can be, she has turned her attention to and analyzing the individual and developing in them the unique feelings aroused simply by being under the water and holding one’s breath. MT as well as being a dedicated instructor and Instructor Trainer, is also a freediving personal training consultant who has developed a Freedive-Yoga integrated training system for her own business, Technique in Blue, based out of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. She also travels widely to teach courses and clinics and to attend competition events to promote her style of freediving awareness.

Her dream is still to discover her “full” potential in freediving competition, and perhaps even more importantly to continue to promote wildlife conservation and sustainable resource education by continuing to freedive and by taking some of her skills into the local fishing communities. One of her personal projects is to become one of only a couple of women to freedive with one of the acclaimed dangers of the sea, the Great White shark to help dispel some of the myths surrounding it.

Her first freediving experience began in 1996 watching her first partner and mentor, Aharon Solomons, deep dive. She was working at a yoga retreat on Crete, Greece.
